Fun In The Sun With Water Parks by
It's summer! The heat is on, and families are looking for fun ways to cool down. While sitting in an air-conditioned movie theater may sound like an easy choice, why not take the kids to a water park? Water parks allow families to be active together, slipping and sliding down exciting rides, all while keeping cool in the water. While every park is different, there are some general tips that will make your visit more enjoyable. Water parks are a different experience than other amusement parks, and its good to be informed about a few things before you go! Park Entry Many parks will make guests pass through metal detection upon entering, to ensure your safety. Bags and purses may also be inspected. Most parks will not allow coolers, outside food, or glass containers, but there are always ample food choices available inside the park grounds. Dress Code Make sure to wear proper swimwear! Some parks have restrictions on attire, and its better to be safe than sorry. A few of the types of attire that may not be allowed are provocative swimwear, long pants, and swimwear with any metal or hard plastic ornamentation. Children should always be in appropriate swimwear, and those wearing diapers should make sure they are waterproof! Weather So that your family remains safe, many parks will close down during periods of severe weather, such as high winds, lightening, or rain. Check with the park to see if they offer rain checks, because many unfortunately do not. What to Bring Again, this depends on your park's policy, so make sure to check first! Some handy things to bring along include: underwater cameras; sunscreen (and make sure to apply under your bathing suit as well); water shoes (your feet can get burnt by the hot pavement); and your own towels, to avoid the long lines at the rental booths. Additional Tips - Check your child's height before you go. This will help you navigate rides with height requirements and avoid disappointment. - Wear a comfortable bathing suit. One-pieces are highly recommended. Don't wear a bikini bottom that ties at the side or around the neck unless you double knot! - Bring a t-shirt or cover-up along, but be aware that some rides do not permit you to wear t-shirts. - Study a map of the park prior to your arrival to become familiar with the location of the attractions that interest you most. - Arrive early (right as the park opens) or late (after 3pm) to avoid long lines. Safety The American Red Cross offers the following safety pointers for water parks: * Learn to swim. If you cannot swim, wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket. * Be sure the area is well supervised by lifeguards before you or others in your group enter the water. * Read all posted signs. Follow the rules and directions given by lifeguards. Ask questions if you are not sure about a correct procedure. * When you go from one attraction to another, note that the water depth may be different and that the attraction should be used in a different way. * Before you start down a water slide, get in the correct position- face up and feet first. |
