It is possible to safely camp with a child and still have fun! Just keep things simple, be flexible and don't expect to get anywhere quickly.

1. Take frequent breaks for nutritious snacks and water--hydration is important.

2. Dress toddlers in bright clothes so they are easy to see when they wander off.

3. Bring a simple first aid kit including band-aids, antibacterial cream, antiseptic, Tylenol and Benadryl to treat sunburns, cuts and scrapes, blisters and mosquito bites.

4. Dress the little ones in layers to keep them warm or cool as needed. Long-sleeve shirts and pants protect from bug bites and sunburns.

5. Bring extra clothes for accidents and messes.

6. Don't forget hats and sunglasses!

7. Reapply sunscreen every few hours and after swimming.

8. Don't forget flashlights for everyone (and extra batteries!).

9. Baby wipes and hand sanitizer are good for cleaning up.

10. Take your list of important phone numbers (including your pediatrician) and cell phone. It's a good idea to locate the nearest ER and pharmacy as well.

How far can kids hike? * Infants will happily travel for hours carried by an adult in an infant carrier. * Children up to 2 years can also be carried by an adult in a child carrier. * The 2-3 year old is often the most difficult to hike with. He will want to walk himself and stop often to check out natural wonders. He can hike up to 1.5-2 miles over easy terrain. He will need to take breaks every 10-15 minutes. * Most 4-6 year olds can hike up to 3-5 miles over easy terrain, for 1-3 hours a day. Take breaks approximately every half hour.

* 7-9 year olds can hike a full day at an easy pace, 5-7 miles over variable terrain.
