Weekend Getaways: La Jolla by Rubin Carson
La Jolla (pronounced la Hoya) means "jewel" in Spanish and is San Diego's poshest suburb. Posh, smosh - Forget the retired admirals and affluent widow residents for which it is famous. This jewel is ideal for a two-day family outing. For the first time ever, we stayed at the Estancia Hotel. This hacienda style hotel does not seem like a hotel but some hideaway for a royal Spanish grandeo. Your kids will enjoy the ornate show of celebrations during the weekend, including weddings, bar mitzvahs, and christenings. The interior decor carries out the traditional Spanish look with soft hues of peach, sage, and cantaloupe set off with Mexican antiques and wicker chairs. Restaurants include The Adobe, which features San Diego seafood (caught that day) and classic down-on-the-ranch food like grilled steaks marinated in spices that make them taste like burritos from the gods. At the Spa Estancia, all forms of exquisite pampering are provided for men and women, including all sorts of body scrubs and a special massage for expectant Moms. Estancia is a totally different La Jolla experience with friendly staff and a pervasive feeling of renewal. Must Do List: Lots of great beaches (the best in California next to Laguna), and extensive mellow green spaces for swimming, sunning, and surfing.
