Delicious Breakfast Choices for Your On-the-Go Family

"This year my children will be sugar free." " I will eat healthy all of the time to finally lose that extra pregnancy weight I gained after the birth of my three year old."

What do these resolutions have in common? One: I make them every year. Two: by January 7, I'm back to treading water for survival. New Year's Resolutions and Reality never seem to meet. And, for me, by January 8th the self-loathing begins.

This year will be different! I'll add a third resolution: "Forget the last two resolutions. Just make ONE small change and STICK with it!" Of course, that one small change has to be effective. So, I've decided to start at the beginning: with breakfast.

Nutritionists say dietary changes that occur in the morning are more likely to stick as a habit. So every member of my family (including my coffee-swilling husband) will begin the day with a healthy breakfast. Two important facts that breakfast research shows:

1. Breakfast eaters are more likely to achieve higher grades. 2. Breakfast helps to set the pattern for nutritious eating throughout the rest of the day.

Of course, which foods you choose for breakfast are just as important as eating them. That means say goodbye to Captain Crunch. The ideal nutritious breakfast contains both complex carbohydrates (grains, fruit) and proteins (milk, eggs).

Here are a few easy and delicious breakfast possibilities that your family will love:

Whole Grain Toast with either: Melted organic cheese & fruit Organic peanut butter w/sliced banana or apple Whole grain cereal w/ organic milk Yogurt & Fruit.

"On the go" Breakfast Shake Simply add frozen bananas and strawberries or blueberries into a blender with equal parts organic milk (or soy milk) and organic yogurt, and throw in a tablespoon of organic powdered non-fat milk for an extra calcium boost to a great high-protein, high-fiber fruit smoothie.

The morning rush to get clothes on the right direction, lunch boxes fully stocked and homework in the backpack can be more grueling than rush hour traffic. By treating yourself and your family to a nutritious start of the day, you can feel good about sticking to your goals and spend quality time with the family.
