HOW DO I PROTECT MY HEARING? ANSWER: The best way to protect your hearing is to avoid hazardous noise exposure. We live in a noisy world, but it actually takes a great deal of noise to cause a hearing loss. If you work in an environment requiring you to be around hazardous noise exposure, use hearing protection devices. HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED A HEARING AID? ANSWER: Many people live in denial of their hearing loss. I wish I had a nickel for every patient that said to me "everybody mumbles" or "If people would only speak up" These are hints that you should have your hearing evaluated. WHAT IF I DON'T LIKE MY HEARING AID? ANSWER: Hearing aids are sold with a trial period. State law mandates a thirty-day period, and my patients can go up to 60 days and still return their hearing aids. CAN I WEAR MY HEARING AIDS TO SLEEP IN? ANSWER: Generally this is not a good idea. First of all, it would not be comfortable. Also, it could come out during sleep and you might lose it. DR. JANE ROSNER, AV.D.
