Remember, Think Safe, Play Safe, Be Safe - Because Safety Rules! By Michael Moore, Michael Moore, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Educational Adventures, LLC. 1. A bike helmet, life vest (not just "floaties") and sunscreen are just as important on vacation as they are at home. Make sure you either bring or rent the necessary equipment to keep your children safe. 2. You should scout any play area or pool on or near a resort or hotel to make sure it is appropriately safe, i.e. suitable Lifeguards and playground equipment that's maintained and meets safety standards (safe material under swings, no loose equipment). High usage equipment can quickly fall out of order. 3. You should empower your children to know that it is ok to stop playing in an uncomfortable situation. They will be around a lot of unfamiliar people children whose habits might be less than safe. It is strong and smart to identify an unsafe situation and tell you. 4. You should be extra diligent in keeping track of the children. New or exciting crowded environments can distract both children and parents causing a separation. 5. Make sure you have a plan that includes a meeting place should the children get separated from you or their caregivers. Many children don't know their own address much less where they are when traveling. Contact info that includes a parent's cell phone kept with each child is advised. Make sure that no child's name is displayed visibly as predators use this info to lure children into feeling comfortable. |
